Detail 1, above. The portrait was drawn remotely from the subject who was in his mid-eighties at the time. It proceeded with the aid of sketches and photos of him emerging from a guided trance/relaxation exercise, gathering pace with the help of memory and knowledge of him, and 'set' over a period of some twenty years prior in order to achieve a wider sense of the man, arriving so at a picture perhaps in this instance unachievable directly with traditional sittings exclusively or by a drawing from a photograph alone, however secured. The work, obviously seeking something of the subject's nature naturally required a high level of traditional realism. The subject, the late David 'Rookie' Roche , was a Cork, Munster and All-Stars Gaelic Football Goalkeeper, an 'Over-60s' Cork champion tenor, and a restorer of ornamental plasterwork on behalf of the Irish Georgian Society and others. He was my uncle.
Detail 2. Usually assumed to be time consuming, such detailed work can be constructed quickly with some technique and luck, and also as this was, from imagination, employing a rapidly sketched underlying series of irregularly shaped and slightly overlapping cross-hatchings that were then at speed selectively toned, partly erased and accented.
